Title for the playstation game Dragon Seeds
dev history art direction gameplay
Dragon seeds is a fairly standard beast battle game. You raise dragons, you fight them. Your goal is to be the best at it. There are some novel (though not unique to only this game) elements to this formula, such as the game being able to read memory card data to craft special dragons on the fly. The game has one and two player mode, with two player mode allowing a friend to bring their own save data to utilize.

When you begin the game, you arrive at the gates of Warm City. You're told you'll need to go to the Clone Lab if you want to start your journey as a Dragonsage. There you will be informed on the process and then able to make your first choice; what kind of dragon do you want?

There are six types of Dragons

Saurian
Saurian Dragons are bipedal beasts, one of the two most 'typical dragon' in visual design. It's also the breed seen on the cover of the game case and the first type you encounter when starting the game. Saurian dragons can be any of the three elements, Storm, fire or Aqua.

Winged
This is the second breed to most fit the bill of "dragon". Always flying, sometimes a cyclops. Pretty weird! These are another all arounder when it comes to potential elements, storm, fire and aqua.

Beetle
Beetle dragons are as they are named, beetles. With two of their six legs they will hold their weapon and reflector, standing partially upright. Beetles can only be either Fire or Storm.

Crustacean
Crab dragons. They hold their weapon and reflector in their pincers and hover, almost UFO like above the ground. Crustation dragons can only be of the element aqua.

Wasp
Flying insect style dragons. They have arms that allow them to hold their weapon and reflector and cast their specials from their stingers. Wasp dragons come in Storm and Aqua.

Natura
These are robot/inorganic style dragons. One branch of evolution resembles almost an organic robot like creature. The other branch seems to be pulling its visual style from Jōmon period Dogū figures. Natura are only able to access the Storm element.

Specials

Spirit
Spirit dragons have a look of a composite creature in their first few forms and eventually evolve into what look like angelic beings.

Evil
Evil dragons come in either the form of a gate or a coffin posessed by some kind of life force. As they evolve they become more elaborite versions of themselves, The gate eventually becoming a sentient cage and the coffin becoming a spirit.

Dragon cloning

Next you are instructed to create a phrase. The words, you are told, correspond to DNA strands needed to complete the DNA sequence. Compatable strands form phrases. The phrase is part of what will be responcible for your dragon's stats.

From here your dragon-still just a simple organism in a vat-is shown to you. This is when you are able to see what attribute scores have been given to your dragon and make the decision of keeping it or starting over. If you decide to keep it, you're then asked to give it a name. Take care in naming it! This is another element that can determine the future of your new friend.

Once you've named your dragon, it's sent off to the nursery until its old enough for collection (one day). In the mean time, you can either explore the rest of the city map or just retire to your aparment until the following day. When you return to the nursery you get the grand reveal of your new dragon! Each species has at least two variations to the visual design of your baby dragon, which allows for a decent amount of variety as you craft new creatures.

Once you have at least one dragon, you're able to more fully explore the rest of the city and interact with it. You will be instructed to get a weapon and reflector before any battles, but this is about the extent of any specific directions given. You can train up your dragon before ever taking on a fight (until you run out of money, anyway). You can rush right off to Pablo's and take your chances in illegal battles. You can step up to the arena and jump immediately to the A class in Baby Rank matches. It's unlikely you'll win, but you're welcome to try! Take care not to let your dragon's energy hit zero though, or you will likely lose them forever. Knowing when to surrender a fight is just as key as learning how to win.

World Map

There are eight locations in the world map.

Training Center The Training Center is the best way to increse your dragons stats without the risk of death. Costing 10g per session, you have three options:

Muscle-Improves your dragons ability with a weapon. The way this is done is with a mini game. you cut down three candles blind, only using a timer to decide when to pull the trigger.
Special-Improves your dragons special attack. This is done with a memory style mini game, where three colored squares are shuffled around a mat and then hidden. You will then be asked to locate the blue square.
Virtual-Shadow boxing battle. your dragon will battle a virtual image of itself. its completely safe. your dragon will not be harmed or killed. Virtual training will give you a bolster in multiple stats, but does take the longest to complete.

Clone Lab
The Clone Lab also hosts the Bio Bank and Nursery. The Clone Lab is where you create your dragons, which are then sent to the Nursery to be raised up until they're ready to be handed to you. The Bio Bank is where you are able to store your other dragons in suspended animation. They will not age as long as they are inside the Bio Bank. You are only allowed to keep one dragon out at a time, but you are able to have as many as 16 dragons in storage.

Pablo's
Pablo's is the hot spot for up and coming Dragonsages to visit in their down time. Here you are able to fight in wager battles. The higher the wager, the tougher the opponant. These matches are not sanctioned and will not impact your ranking at the Battle Arena. You can also bring any wild dragons you've caught to fight here, as they are not allowed in official bouts.

Junk Shop
The Junk Shop is one of two locations where you're able to purchase weapons and reflectors. The Junk Shop will also get in consumable items that can boost your dragon's stats. It's worth visiting frequently, as the offerings will change out daily.

Shop
The Shop is the only Offical location for purchasing weapons and reflectors you are told by its owner, Nancy. She does not speak kindly of Ishuka and his Junk Shop. You will have more options here, and most consistent product. Items do rotate out, so it is worth checking back in over time.

Apartment
Your apartment is where you can rest, save, and change out items on your dragon. Resting is just as important for your dragon's growth as training, so don't skip it!

Battle Arena
Where all sanctioned, ranked fighting takes place. There are four teirs of matches. Baby, Junior, fighter and WDC Division (World Dragon Council Campionship division).

Memory Forest
Overseen by Dr Hiro, This is where you can release dragons you no longer wish to keep on your team. Later, you will also be able to hunt for wild dragons here. Wild dragons cannot be used in official bouts. To capture a wild dragon, you will need a memory card in slot 2, an empty biobank tube, and your current dragon must be an adult.
